Recreational Rowing: Gliding on the Ottawa River beneath the Parliament Buildings, in front of the Museum of Civilization, to the Rideau Falls, and around Kettle Island are all parts of the recreational program rowing experience at the Ottawa Rowing Club.
The rowing season starts in early May and ends in late October. Recreational rowers practice three days a week: on Sundays at 8h30, and on Mondays and Wednesdays at 18h00. A coach accompanies the rowers on the water and provides tips. Beginners primarily sweep in eights and fours with coxswain.
Recreational members have the option to attend two local regattas: the Ottawa Recreational regatta (mid-July) and the Head of the Rideau (end-September) and may be able to travel to one or two other regattas depending on the year. The ORC hosts the Ottawa Recreational Regatta. Races are 800m long and racing takes place in front of the ORC boathouse. We also host the HO Rideau, but from the docks of the Rideau Canoe Club, located on the Rideau River near Mooney's Bay. These 'head' races are 3-5km long. Recreational rowers are responsible for their own regatta fees and costs where applicable.
The recreational program provides opportunities to improve skills and to participate in a number of social events.
Prior rowing experience: Learn-to-Row or other basic rowing experience.
